Outstanding Quality Hybrid Butternuts from Sakata

Over the past few years Sakata has set a new standard in the world of butternuts with a complete range of outstanding quality F1 hybrid butternuts. This exciting range of butternuts meets the requirements of the different market segments perfectly.  The success of these varieties is based on high yield, internal quality, uniformity in size and shape and plant vigour.

Atlas

Atlas F1 hybridis a Cucurbita moschata type butternut bearing large fruit with excellent fruit qualities.  Atlas is widely adapted and the overall vigour of this variety tends to make it less susceptible to diseases. Yield potential is very good. Fruit set is excellent and covers a long bearing season.  Atlas is also well adapted for cooler season harvests as fruit are smaller and suitable for the fresh market.  Flavour is considered excellent with improved colour and high sugars. The flesh texture is very firm and the rind is very smooth. The rind colour is tan when mature.  The mature fruit have an excellent shelf life. Fruit are used as traditional butternut however the superior flesh quality makes Atlas ideal for processing. This is the variety of choice for most processors.

Fruit weight: 2 – 3 kg

Cosmos

Cosmos F1 hybridis a Cucurbita moschata type butternut with medium-sized fruit. The bush plants are vigorous and tend therefore to be less susceptible to diseases. Yield potential is excellent for a bush type plant.  The smooth rind has a tan colour when mature. Cosmos is well adapted for planting in spring. As fruit set is concentrated, fruit may be ready for harvest when supply to the market is limited. One of the advantages of the bush plant is that mechanical weed control is possible well into the growing season. Cosmos has intermediate resistance to Powdery mildew (Px) (ex Sf).

Fruit weight: 0,8 – 1,2 kg

Pluto

Pluto F1 hybridis a Cucurbita moschata type butternut with medium-sized fruit and excellent fruit quality. Plants are adaptable and vigorous and tend therefore to be less susceptible to diseases. Yield potential is excellent and the fruit are not inclined to crack.  Fruit set is excellent and covers a long bearing season. The firm, deep orange flesh has an excellent flavour and high sugar content. The smooth rind has a tan colour when mature. Mature fruit have an excellent shelf life. Pluto is well adapted for cooler season harvests where small to medium fruit are required. Fruit are used as traditional butternut for the fresh market, however the superior flesh quality makes Pluto suitable for processing and export. Pluto has intermediate resistance to Powdery mildew (Px) (ex Sf).

Fruit weight: 1 – 1,5 kg

Quantum

Quantum F1 hybridis a Cucurbita moschata type butternut with medium-sized fruit and excellent fruit quality. Plants are adaptable and vigorous and tend therefore to be less susceptible to diseases. Yield potential is excellent and the fruit are not inclined to crack.  Fruit set is excellent and covers a long bearing season. Fruit shape is similar to that of Waltham and the size is smaller than Pluto but larger than Veenas. The firm, deep orange flesh has an excellent flavour and high sugar content. The smooth rind has a tan colour when mature. Mature fruit have an excellent shelf life.  Quantum is well adapted for warm season harvests where medium sized fruit are required. Fruit are used as traditional butternut, but the excellent internal quality and shelf-life makes Quantum suitable for processing and export. Quantum has intermediate resistance to Powdery mildew (Px) (ex Sf).

Veenas

Veenas F1 hybridis a Cucurbita moschata type butternut. Fruit are small to medium in size (comparable to Waltham) with excellent fruit quality and uniformity. Plants are widely adapted and yield potential is excellent. Fruit set is excellent and covers a long bearing season. Fruit weigh between 600 and 1000g, have a short Waltham shape and are not inclined to crack. Flesh is very firm, yellow orange in colour and has an excellent flavour. The rind is very smooth and tan in colour when mature. The mature fruit have an excellent shelf life. Veenas is well adapted for warm season harvests where small to medium sized fruit are required, and is the variety of choice for exporters looking for a small fruit size Veenas has intermediate resistance to Powdery mildew (Px) (ex Sf).
