OUTSTANDING QUALITIES
- Semi-bush type
- Strong, vigorous grower
- Thick fleshed with a small seed cavity
- Stores very well
Nelson is a very early maturing semi-bush type, grey-skinned pumpkin hybrid with very good internal quality. An advantage of planting a semi-bush variety such as Nelson, is that mechanical weed control is possible until late in the season and they have a shorter production cycle compared to vining types. Nelson’s plants are vigorous and each plant can be expected to produce about 1 – 2 fruits. The fruit shape is similar to Crown Prince and the flesh is thick, deep orange in colour and very firm. The fruit are medium sized (3 – 5 kg) and smooth. Due to Nelson’s internal quality and smooth surface, fruit are ideal for processing.
SPECIAL VARIETAL REQUIREMENTS
- We suggest a plant population of 6 000 plants per hectare as fruit size decreases at higher plant populations
- The best results so far have been obtained in warm season plantings
- Nelson may be stored for up to 3 months under controlled conditions
